Jewel has worked as a volunteer for twenty-eight years on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Multicultural Council. For many years Jewel devoted her time to volunteering and helping in various community efforts. Her efforts in the community are numerous. She has volunteered for AARP, served as President of the Albuquerque Northwest Retired Educators Association, Chaired the TV-I (CNM) Emeritus College Advisory Committee, lead an Albuquerque tutorial program for students and was elected to the Rio Rancho, New Mexico first school Board. Jewel knows about educational benefits. She taught high school in Oak Grove, Louisiana. She was a teacher in Saginaw, Michigan for 22 years before she came to Albuquerque. She taught at Albuquerque High School and Albuquerque’s Sandia High School. Jewel served as President of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation. She retired from Albuquerque Public Schools.
